If you have any questions about digital home recording please feel free to use the contact form to drop us a line with your questions. I will post the answers on the blog and if it's a question that many people are asking, the topic will get it's own page here on the site.

Software

When we use the term software on this site we are usually referring to the actual software recording platform i.e. Protools Le or Cakewalk Sonar or Cubase. Each platform has it's strengths and weaknesses. Some like Protools and Sonar excel in situations where a professional studio setup is being approximated in a home studio. Others like Ableton or Garage Band are great for people who are into a loops based method of making music. Choosing the right software is about selecting the tool that will make the creation of your kind of sound happen.

PLUGINS

A plugin is a virtual recreation of a physical piece of equipment. It allows you to alter the sound in much the same way as an actual physical piece of equipment. Most software recording packages come with a basic complement of plugins. Over the next few weeks we will try and add information about different plugins and what they can be used for.

At the top navigation of this page we are giving you an overview of types of plugins rather than delving into a specific make and model of plugin because there are just too many! However all compressor plugins have the same basic settings as do all equalizer plugins for example. You may like one plugin better than another because of the results you get but in operation all plugins of a certain type share the same types of controls and parameters.
