Overdubs

Traditionally things like vocals and lead guitars are recorded by themselves after the bed tracks in a process referred to as “Overdubs”. The reason why these particular elements are recorded on their own is that you want to capture these sounds in as discreet a manner as possible. In other words you don’t want any other sounds leaking into the microphone, this is especially true when recording a lead vocal. If you have a single room setup hopefully you have a closet nearby.

Into The Closet

A closet can be great for recording guitar tracks and can also double as a recording booth for vocals. If you can get your microphone stand into your closet and have clothes to the left and right of the mic and something else hung on the back of the closet you will effectively limit any reflections from getting into the microphone. If the vocalist stands in front of the closet to sing the microphone is closed in on all four sides making it difficult for outside sounds to get into your recording. Similarly, if you can get your microphone cable under the door you can place your guitar amplifier in the closet with the microphone and close the door. This way you can crank up the amp to get a good tone without ripping your own head off with the volume! If you’re working with a tube amplifier, make sure that there is nothing touching the tubes or in close proximity to the tubes as this may prove to be a fire hazard!

If you have a few bucks to spend there are products out there that come with a special microphone stand or clamp on to an existing mic stand that provide some isolation from outside sounds. If you have a few more bucks to spend you can build yourself a small vocal booth or buy one. If the money just isn’t there to afford any of these options and there isn’t a closet that you can use nearby try hanging some packing blankets or putting some foam in a corner of the room, then hang another blanket on a mic stand. Just make the stand look like a "T" and hang you blanket. This works well in a pinch.
