Vocals

Probably the best advice anyone can give about working with vocals in a mix is to leave them alone! You are usually going to want to lightly compress and add a little reverb to the vocals, but in terms of equalization unless you are trying to fix a specific problem leave the vocals alone. If you are having difficulty making your vocals heard without cranking them up way high, resist the temptation to crank up the midrange on the vocals. Instead find the instruments that are masking the vocals and attenuate the frequencies between 2 and 4 Khz. This is where the vocals have their greatest strength.
